Minecraft has different combat systems between Java and Bedrock Edition, and many players have different preferences. Instead of replacing the current systems, Mojang could add permanent experimental combat options, similar to the Villager Trade Rebalancing experiment.
Java Edition could have an Experimental Classic Combat option inspired by older combat mechanics. Bedrock Edition could have an Experimental Modern Combat option inspired by modern Java combat, including attack cooldowns, attack timing, weapon timing, shield interactions, and other mechanics focused on timing.
These experiments could remain available permanently as optional world settings. Players could enable them when creating a world, while the normal combat system would remain unchanged when the experiment is disabled.
This would give players more freedom without forcing Mojang to choose one combat system for everyone. It could also improve Java–Bedrock parity by allowing Bedrock players to experience modern Java-style combat and Java players to experience classic combat.
The experimental systems could continue receiving balancing and improvements over time based on community feedback. This would be a good way to preserve existing combat while giving players an optional alternative.
