I think Minecraft Java should add a gamerule to bring back Legacy Combat as an optional combat mode.
Something like /gamerule legacyCombat true.
I personally enjoy the new combat in Survival, but when it comes to PvP, I really miss the old system. I used to play on small servers with my friends where we'd build arenas and compete every week. PvP was something we practiced and improved at together. It was a skill we could learn, and winning felt rewarding.
Modern PvP is still highly skill-based, but for me it doesn't have the same enjoyment. The competitive scene has evolved into things like crystal PvP and highly optimized techniques, which can feel very different and harder than the previous spam click we had from the PvP that many older players remember.
I'm sure I'm not the only player who feels this way. It's also a major reason many minigames servers are still stuck on 1.8. They have communities built around Legacy Combat and can't move forward without losing an important part of their gameplay.
An official gamerule could solve this without removing modern combat. Servers could run the latest Minecraft version while choosing Legacy Combat for their PvP modes, giving them access to all the new blocks, mobs, world generation and other updates.
Don't remove either combat system. Let them coexist and give players the choice, this will for sure bring back the old minecraft community and would make minecraft explode on the trend again.
