I think deer would be a great addition to Minecraft because they could add more life to forests while also creating a new exploration and collecting mechanic (and creating a way for decorative tools). Different deer species could spawn in different biomes, each with unique coats, antler shapes and sizes, encouraging players to travel in search of different variants.
Deer could behave differently from other passive mobs by being skittish and alert. If a player approaches too quickly, they could raise their head and run away, while crouching would allow players to get closer. Deer could also travel in small herds and naturally shed their antlers over time, meaning players would not have to kill them to collect their antlers. Shed antlers could vary in shape, colour, size and number of points, making some variants rarer and more desirable to collect.
The main use for antlers could be cosmetic tool customisation. Minecraft already has armour trims, so it would be great to have a similar system for tools. Different antler types could be used at a smithing table to add unique designs to swords, pickaxes, axes, hoes and shovels without changing their stats. Different deer species could create different tool designs, giving players a reason to search for rare antlers and personalise the tools they use every day.
Antlers could also have decorative uses, such as mounted antlers, chandeliers, candle holders or other rustic building blocks.
