For years, Minecraft capes flew under the radar for most players, until the Java Account Migration in 2021. Players were required to migrate their Mojang accounts to Microsoft accounts and received the Migrator Cape as a reward. This unexpectedly sparked greater interest in Minecraft capes.
Since then, there has been a growing black market for Minecraft accounts with rare capes, such as the Minecon 2011 Cape. Mojang has tried to make capes less exclusive by giving out more through physical and virtual events, but this had the opposite effect, with people collecting cape redemption code and reselling them for profits.
But I think there could be a better solution. Capes originally given out through virtual events could eventually be made available for purchase in the Bedrock Marketplace. This would give players who missed the events a legitimate way to get them.
For capes from physical events, players attending future physical events could have the option to receive either the current events cape or a cape from a previous event.
This could make older capes more accessible, reduce their artificial scarcity and resale value, while still preserving their value as exclusive rewards for attending physical events. Hopefully, this will also discourage the black market surrounding Minecraft accounts.
