Special crops for each biome (starting with the cold ones)

Each biome could have its own unique crops that would normally grow in their respective biome, but would take longer to grow when taken to other biomes. In the case of cold biomes, standard crops would take much longer to grow, and it would be more viable to plant the biome's native foods, which would grow normally. Foods I'm thinking of include: oats (which could be turned into porridge) and onions (which would become soup but could also be eaten like an apple)
