What if villages were only the beginning?
Minecraft has villages, but why can’t its villagers have cities too? I think the Overworld should have a natural progression of settlements: villages, towns and cities. Villages could remain mostly as they are, while towns would be somewhat larger and cities would be rare, impressive settlements with simple walls and gates, many more houses, a large central market square, a cathedral or temple, and a castle.
Cities could also introduce two new villagers: Bishops and Regents. Bishops would be found in the cathedral alongside clerics and would simply have a higher position within the fictional religious hierarchy. Regents would live in the castle and organize the city and its Iron Golems. They should not create a complicated class system: villagers would still be fundamentally equal. The ruler’s main differences would simply be living in the castle and offering special luxury trades.
The religion should be completely fictional and unique to Minecraft, inspired by its own mythology and the gods already present in the Minecraft universe. Its temples could take architectural inspiration from medieval, Egyptian and other historical civilizations without representing any real-world religion.
This wouldn’t replace villages — it would let them grow. Villages could be small communities, towns could become larger settlements, and cities could become the great centers of the Overworld.
