The Rift should feel like more than a new dimension—it should have its own progression and require players to adapt.
I suggest a “Dimensional Affinity” system. Overworld resources would still work in The Rift, but less effectively. For example, Steak or even Golden Carrots could restore less hunger/saturation there. Meanwhile, Rift-native creatures could provide new foods that are much more effective in the Rift.
The same could apply to equipment. New Rift ores/materials could be used to create weapons, tools and armor specially adapted to the dimension. A Diamond/Netherite sword would remain useful, but Rift equipment could be significantly more effective against Rift creatures and bosses. Outside the Rift, that equipment could be less effective.
This would create a natural progression: enter with your existing gear → explore for Rift food and resources → craft Rift equipment → access more dangerous areas → discover and prepare for a unique, difficult boss.
The boss should require understanding the Rift’s mechanics rather than simply having a huge health bar. Its defeat could unlock new areas, resources or mechanics, giving players reasons to keep exploring after the boss.
The goal isn’t to make existing gear useless or punish players. It’s to make the Rift feel like a completely different ecosystem: being powerful gets you there, but you still have to learn, adapt and explore to truly master it.
