One thing I find very annoying about the nether is how incredibly difficult the terrain is to navigate. Sure, you can build to travel through some areas, but that can only get you so far (it's especially difficult to go down).
Enter: the floater! It's a new nether mob, squid-like in appearance and hot-air balloon-like in movement. Players can tame floaters by feeding them ghast tears, and ride them with saddles (or maybe they could hang below them instead).
Unlike other flying mobs, which move up and down at will, the floater's elevation changes based on what block is beneath it. Since it moves like a hot air balloon, it rises whenever it's above fire, soul fire, or lava. However, there can't be any solid blocks between the floater and the source of heat, and it does not rise infinitely, because that would be extremely over/underpowered (depending on the context). I'm thinking it doesn't rise more than 10 blocks above fire and soul fire, and doesn't rise more than 30 blocks above lava. It slowly falls whenever it isn't over any of those blocks. This would introduce a new and interesting means of flight to the game.
However, there's one problem I'm not sure how to fix: by adding floaters, striders would become effectively useless. So if you have any ideas for how to fix it, please comment below, so this idea can be improved and hopefully, eventually added!
