I do believe a few other people have shared ideas like this on here, but I'm not sure to what extent!
I think it would be really fun to encourage more adventure through the types of pets someone can get! We already have a little bit of that in Minecraft, but I would love to see more of a personality update with specifically wolves, cats, and farm animals!
I think it would be really neat if, depending on either the biome they spawn in or the sound "personality" an animal was given, they also had different behavior abilities. For example, with wolves, perhaps some would be more useful for helping the player herd livestock mobs, while others are more useful as fighting buddies or just general exploration companions? I would love it if my dogs in my singleplayer world could help out with farming & ranching when I bring them with me, rather than just getting in the way while I lure animals and cutting off their line of sight from the wheat or seeds I'm holding... :') It would be very interesting if the tamed wolf's presence was enough to keep the sheep/cows/pigs/chickens closer together while I lure a large number of them either in or out of a pen. (Perhaps good incentive to get players to try different ideas, or maybe even just fun for players who like to build manual/classic farms for fun, like myself!) I often find that I am too afraid that my pets will get in the way or get hurt while I am out doing my tasks in my world, and I would really love more incentive to bring em along!
