Fireflies have no use other than atmospheric purposes. But I think we can give fireflies another use.
Here's the thing, I find it weird that a lot of light sources in minecraft are crafted by players. The only way to see during night-time is usually torches, which are made by players.
So, fireflies should become the "natural light source" for the overworld, by giving them dynamic lighting. They should spawn in every biome (they spawn much more in swamps however) and emit light.
The Minecraft Engine doesn't really support dynamic lighting, and it would take a while to add support for dynamic lighting. So we could just switch the light over from one block to another (you can do that with light blocks in datapacks, so its possible). Its not very smooth, but you can probably add some sort of transition.
