I suggest adding a rare traveling NPC called the Rogue Trader who acts as a dark mirror to the Wandering Trader. Instead of llamas, he travels with a pack of clever, masked Scavenger Raccoons. There are tons of great heist mechanics and game play and counter-play purpose loops. This is what I’ve come up with.
The Heist Mechanic: When this “Rouge Trader” spawns near a base, the raccoons slip away into the shadows. Using their nimble hands that Raccoons are so famous for, they can open un-secured single chests or barrels to pull out small, shiny items (like iron/copper nuggets, emeralds, or food) and run back to their assigned trader.
The Game-Play Loop: When a character interacts with the “Rogue Trader”, he will offer to sell their stolen items back to them for the price of emeralds or highly coveted items. However, players can also use him as a "fence" by giving his raccoons useless items (like rotten flesh or poisonous potatoes) in exchange for a variety loot they "found" in nearby villages or players if they are playing in a multi-player game or server.
The Balance: To balance out the fact that the raccoons can steal from players, there could be a fear or aversion added to the raccoons behavior code. This could be a fear of cats or wolves, and aversion to areas with certain lighting or crop that’s being grown. I also think there could be objects like double chests or maybe boat chests that they can’t open.
