Sootlings would be small, friendly creatures that live around fire, smoke, and hot places, especially in the Nether. They could sometimes appear near campfires, active furnaces, Nether Fortresses, ruined portals, or lava.
Over time, Sootlings would get covered in soot. Players could collect it with a brush instead of hurting the mob. Water would wash the soot off and briefly reveal the Sootling’s lighter gray body.
Soot could have a few simple uses:
1. Nether Wart fertilizer. Using soot on Nether Wart would move it forward by one growth stage, giving Nether farming its own version of Bone Meal.
2. Soot Layer. A thin decorative layer similar to snow that could be used for chimneys, fireplaces, ruins, factories, or burned areas. Multiple layers could be stacked.
3. Block of Soot. A soft, matte black building block with a dusty texture, clearly different from Coal Blocks and Blackstone.
Sootlings could also have some small behaviors to make them feel alive. They might sit near active furnaces, hide inside extinguished campfires, leave small soot particles while walking, or get a slight blue tint near Soul Fire.
The main idea is to make the Nether feel more alive without adding a complicated new system. It would just be one memorable mob, one useful resource, and a few new decorative building options.
