I suggest adding a new lava drowning mechanic to Minecraft.
When a player is completely submerged in lava, they would slowly run out of “air,” similar to how drowning works in water. An oxygen-style meter could appear above the hotbar while the player is submerged.
After the meter runs out, the player would begin taking additional lava suffocation damage. Leaving the lava would immediately stop the drowning effect and allow the meter to refill.
Fire Resistance could protect the player from lava damage as usual, but lava drowning could remain a separate mechanic to make being completely submerged in lava more dangerous.
This would make lava feel more distinct from water while adding another survival mechanic to the game.
