Once I was in a small boat on the ocean and looked down into the water (at someones suggestion) and even though it was completely dark, I could see dolphins swimming through the water because as they swam they activated bioluminescent algae in the water. The result was that as they swam, the water sparked to life in little dots of light in the shape of their bodies. It was as though they were swimming through glitter, and i could not see the dolphins, but I could see their shapes in glowing little dots. The dots themselves did not move, each dot stayed where it was but only glowed while the dolphin touched it, such that the shape of the dolphin moved through the water by new lights forming as the dolphin touched them, and as the dolphin no longer contacted the light it turned off.
I think this kind of bioluminescent motion particle effect would be awesome for the dolphins to have at night. You could see them from far away, but their motion would be perceived from light dots that themselves don't move at all.
