Since Apple deprecated OpenGL on macOS and does not natively support Vulkan, Minecraft Java Edition relies on translation layers and legacy rendering paths. A native Metal renderer could improve performance, reduce CPU overhead, provide more consistent frame times, and improve power efficiency on Apple Silicon Macs (M1, M2, M3, and newer).
Apple Silicon devices have demonstrated strong graphics performance in games that use Metal natively. Bringing native Metal support to Minecraft Java Edition would help the game better utilize modern Mac hardware while reducing reliance on compatibility layers.
