Although bats are adorable and provide ambience currently, it is a shame that you cannot tame them. Bats in the caves are similar to the parrots in the jungle, in my opinion. The difference is that the parrots can be tamed, while bats cannot. With taming them, besides from being a cute companion, here are some ideas for gameplay and functionality:
-Taming method: Bats would be tamed using spider eyes(nod to insectivorous bats) or glowberries(nod to fruit eating bats). They can only be tamed when active and not perched.
-Shoulder Perching: Like parrots, bats can shoulder perch. In doing so, at night or in dark places such as caves, they can provide temporary night vision for 30 seconds with a cooldown of 15 seconds on command using the "use" button (right-click by default). This makes them highly valuable pets for their rarity.
-Balancing: Bats are inactive during the day time and will sleep on the ceiling of wherever they are when day breaks such as but not limited to: Trees, base ceilings, caves, and more. In doing this, they can only be used at night and can stay in a safe location of the player's choosing, such as their base. Also, bats maintain their low health and are vulnerable on a players shoulder. This means the player will have to protect the bat from mobs and environmental dangers such as lava or magic.
In general, bats would make great pets in both terms of being adorable and being useful with the previously stated ideas.
