I really like that Java Edition now has official player-style NPCs. They are a great addition for map makers, adventure maps, and servers.
I think it would be even better if both editions offered the same NPC options. Instead of replacing the existing NPCs, Minecraft could include both types on both editions:
A Player NPC, using player models and customizable skins.
A Villager NPC, using the villager model.
Both NPCs could have the same features, such as dialogue, commands, quests, and interactions. The only difference would be their appearance, allowing creators to choose whichever fits their world best.
This would improve feature parity between Java and Bedrock while giving creators more freedom. For example, villagers could be used for towns and shops, while player NPCs could represent adventurers, guards, kings, or story characters.
Adding both options would make Minecraft's creative tools more flexible without removing any existing functionality.
