I have been conceiving this idea for a long time, of how to make Illager Raids more challenging for the player, while at the same time introducing a new villager trade, in the same entity.
I have an idea for an illager type, that would spawn on raids at a high percentage, and in other Illager spawns as a lower percentage.
This mob is only hostile when in the presence of other illagers, but becomes neutral if isolated.
When hostile, the Carpenter can interact with and break blocks that don't require iron or diamond tools, creating openings in player defenses to allow other raiders in. His weapon/tool would be a Copper Carpenter's Axe, an axe that also has half of a pick on it.
If defending and hostile (in a Watchtower or Woodland Mansion), the Carpenter repairs holes created by the player by placing Dark Oak plank blocks. In a Pale Garden, the Carpenter aggressively attacks Pale Oak trees and is not frightened by the Creaking.
When made docile (by eliminating his Illager cohorts) and in a village, the Carpenter acts as any other villager (but does not breed with them) and has appropriate emerald trades, buying and selling different wood types, and wood items such as chiseled bookshelves, shelves, chests etc. He attends villager meetings but remains apart from the other villagers and makes grumpy sounds.
If other hostile Illagers come into the village radius, he becomes hostile again and attacks the player and the player's blocks until rendered docile by isolation again.
Respectfully!
