Meerkats were part of the 2018 Biome Vote as part of the desert update. Despite losing the vote, the losing biomes were confirmed be added later on, so here are a few features that the meerkat mob could have when implemented, based on traits of real meerkats:
- When real meerkat families are foraging for food, they will have several meerkats act as sentries to watchout for predators. If any predators are spotted, the sentry meerkat will make a warning sound to alert the family. In Minecraft, this could be implemented so that a meerkat will make such a warning sound when any hostile mob is within a certain range. This could be used to alert a player that one or more hostile mobs are near by. If a player breeds two meerkats, the baby will trust the player and will also make alert sounds when untrusted players are near. If a meerkat burrow in sand is nearby, they will sleep during the night and not alert.
- Real meerkats typically eat insects or adjacent, like spiders and millipeds. In Minecraft, they could attack these types of mobs (silverfish/endermites/spiders), or these mobs are afraid of meerkats and run away, similar to creepers with cats.
Example cases:
- When building within villages, one zombie can ruin everything by infecting/killing villagers, having a meerkat there to alert players right away could be invaluable.
- Players can create security systems for their bases using trusting meerkats making alerts at unknown players, detected by Skulk Sensors, to trigger redstone systems.
