May sound a little harsh, but cats are virtually useless, and creepers do not fall under the rule of "it should be the players fault, not the game's fault." There have been one too many times where if I'm minding my own business and I hear a hiss behind me, there's simply nothing I can do to stop it at that point. Most times, creeper explosions feel like random events out of my control.
Now, cats are SUPPOSED to scare off creepers, but the block and a half radius is far too short to be effective, especially when cats wander off and do their own thing (as they do in real life)
A thing with wolves is that they help protect you and fight off hostile mobs to protect you. Same as Iron Golems. However, neither mob will defend you against creepers.
So if there isn't a single mob that can help protect you against the random creeper explosions, why not cats? Cats in real life are natural born hunters, so they should have something to hiss at and chase down in-game.
I feel there's a lot of growing hate towards Minecraft's most iconic mob. I feel the only way to better balance creepers without changing them would be to just buff the cats. Because as it stands, cats serve no purpose other than to follow you around until they find somewhere to sit. The very least that could help would be increasing the radius that creepers detect cats.
Truly hope to see this in the near future. It's honestly getting really tiring.
