It’s a good idea, I think it’d be better if they added 3 new trees rather than the one though, then we could get 3 different colors of logs and wood added along with 3 saplings.

My opinion is they should add maple trees with dark reddish-purple logs for the red leaves since reddish-orange maple leaves are so iconic. And then add aspen trees with a pale golden yellow logs for the yellow leaves. It’d also be nice if poplars and aspens got a new unique tree generation type to represent how they appear in real life, but that may be asking for too much from Mojang.

The whole idea seems important because it allows to build with the trees more easily - in some cases one would want specific leaf color to go with their build.
The obvious way to do this is by making each color of the leaf blocks drop their specific color of sapling, but this can encounter problems with cluttering the inventory with three different items, which even with the use of the bundle can be quite cumbersome.
So I would argue that it would be best to implement this by crafting regular sapling with appropriately colored leaves. This way there will be 4 different items, but only 1 is obtained by regular means, and that also allow players to plant trees of ambiguous color in case they want to, for example, replant the trees in the Dappled Forest.
Using leaves specifically for crafting feels more intuitive than using dyes, since leaves is the thing one is trying to modify about the resulting tree, and also it reminds me of "grafting", a technique where parts of a plant (in this case - leaves) are joined with another plant (in this case - the sapling) to affect their combined growth, and although one could argue this connection is superficial, Minecraft does often reference real-life phenomena while implementing them in its own Minecraft-y way.

This idea is great I was about to post it too but I think just 3 new saplings would be more efficient
