Online multiplayer

Why removed the online multiplayer option for java?? I went to go play with my friends that live in different time zones and it wouldn't let us. Very very disappointing. Please let it come back if it was or wasn't temporary. I can't run bedrock on my computer so it was really nice being able to still play with my friends on java.
