Peer to Peer backporting

I know Peer to Peer was added in the most recent snapshot of Minecraft. However, sometimes I play in older versions with mods or maps. Could it be possible to make an official "mod" or way to add the new peer to peer system to older versions of the game? The entire production of the relay servers are already up and running! I imagine a simple conversion of the previous lan models that move through the new relays could easily implement it in older versions. It truly would be amazing!
