Open letter to Mojang,
I wanted to share some feedback regarding the “Nitwit” villager in Minecraft. I understand the character is intended as a gameplay variation and humorous flavor, but for a while it has bothered me. I'm concerned that having a villager labeled “Nitwit” who is permanently unable to work may unintentionally reinforce harmful stereotypes about intellectual or developmental disabilities and unemployment. I am an autistic adult, and like many of my peers, have enjoyed Minecraft for years. Many of us already face significant barriers to employment such as discrimination or a workplace being unwilling to accommodate for our differences. Because Minecraft has such a broad audience, I think it’s worth considering whether this “Nitwit” portrayal sends an unintended message.
I appreciate the work the Minecraft team does on accessibility and inclusivity, and I wanted to offer this perspective respectfully as feedback for future design discussions.
