let's be honest, Minecraft is meant to be played by kids. putting any kind of realistic gunpowder recipe into the game would not be a great idea. I'm not sure if even a fake recipe should be added just to avoid putting the idea of making gunpowder in kids' heads.
It's clear that many people want gunpowder to be more available so i have some alternative ideas:
(only one of these options would be in the game)
1. gunpowder ore: (completely unrealistic as it should be) found exclusively in sulfur caves. the ore's base could be cinnabar or sulfur instead of stone/deepslate. this ore could somewhat solve the problem of other ores not generating in the biome. this is because you'd likely be coming to this biome to mine gunpowder instead those other ores. gunpowder ore could add a genuine reason for coming to the cave besides for new blocks or the sulfur cube.
2. sulfur cubes produce gunpowder: maybe sulfur cubes could eat certain things, consume them, and drop gunpowder in it's place?
3. creepers spawn more in sulfur caves: not swarms of them, but more to make it easier to get gunpowder.
4. fantasy based crafting for gunpowder. What I mean is the crafting recipe would use something fictional to be made rather than being a realistic recipe.
