Caterpillars are small mobs that can be found crawling in plains, forests or jungle biomes, and have a chance of dropping from oak, birch and jungle leaves generated from a tree similar to silverfish. They can be carried using an empty bucket or killed, giving a caterpillar item that can be used as bait to catch more fish, useful for early game players.
After a while, caterpillars will crawl around, up a tree if necessary, to find a leaf block with an air gap beneath it, allowing to to become a chrysalis. It can be picked up with silk touch, and placed back under leaf blocks. Any other blocks will not allow it to hatch.
Then, they will hatch into butterflies of a random colour out of 16. Each coloured butterfly when killed drops itself as an item, and can be used in crafting to craft its corresponding dye. Butterflies can be bred with flowers, dropping several eggs which can be placed anywhere, but will only hatch with light levels of 7 and below. If both butterflies are bred with the same flower, the eggs dropped will hatch into caterpillars which have a 40% chance to eventually turn into butterflies of that flowers' colour, and a 4% chance of becoming another random colour. If bred with different flowers, all offspring will have random colours. Caterpillars will look identical, but carry nbt data that decide if they have a bias towards becoming a certain colour, or completely random. Butterflies also can be used to breed frogs!
