Horses are still considered somewhat unreliable in the current game, here are a few reasons why:
- Their minimal stats are too low: some horses are slower than 5m/s, jump lower than 1.25 blocks and have 15 HP (specially bad for fall damage), for reference, the players sprints at 5.6m/s and sprint jumps at 7.1m/s.
- Horse breeding takes too long: it takes multiple generations of horses and tests in order to get small increases. This process takes hours that could have been spent doing something else (such as getting an elytra).
- Bad manuverability: the horse's head blocks most of the view, and it gets stuck on leaves on forests and can be bad at parkour.
Here are a few solutions and more:
- Increase minimal stats: minimal speed increased to 6.5m/s, minimal jump height increased to 1.8 blocks and HP to 18.
- Stat enhancing items: feeding the horse an item (such as sniffer's plants) will increase some of the offspring's stats depending on the item.
- Better manuverability: head becomes semi-transparent, can run through leaves (can still jump and stand on them), gains a toggleable sprint for more precise movement, horse takes 35% less fall damage.
- Better armor: lower tier horse armor gets small stat increases, and can now be enchanted partially be enchanted (like nerfed protection and depth strider) and gains an enchant that pushes mobs away when running through them.
