Kitsune are a mythological foxes from Asian Folklore. They are shape shifters, who with age sprout extra tails, 1-9 of them. They could spawn in Sakura Forests, but without said Biome they wouldn't spawn. My take on this is to make a Kitsune. If a fox dies with a totem of undying they are turned into a kitsune. (Or could be struck by lightning, but that's boring) To prevent our adorable foxy friends from being slain by the player, I propose this. If a player kills a fox with totem of undying, than the resulting kitsune would be hostile to the player. The Kitsune would attack with bites and fox fire. Fox fire is a special blue fire, with black accents. This would appear around the kitsune like wisps, before being launched at the player. As a rare ability it could also gigantify, enough to become taller than the player. Kitsune in proximity to crops and farm land would buff crop harvest. This maybe gives you an extra carrot per harvest. Kitsune can also be seen as messengers. They may bring you little gifts or books and quills. They would be tame able in a sense. Feeding them Inarizushi, some rice in a tofu pocket, they would become friendly, and stick around. They would not function like a dog, but would defend you like normal foxes do. Back to foxfire, if a Kitsune shoots fire at you, you could bottle the fire. This would make Fox fire in a jar. This could stand in for wisp in a jar. This is more mod worthy than vanilla worthy but I still propose it anyway.
