Signing into Xbox Live involves signing into Microsoft. Microsoft has amazing security but absolutely awful security algorithms. It's all automated and if you don't satisfy the bot with the information it requires, it will not allow you to reset your password. Even with linked/trusted accounts, you cannot reset passwords without also satisfying the questionnaire. Using the "sign in helper" and "account recovery" tools is just an exercise in futility or really great inspiration if you want to smash your face against your desk in frustration. It's too much when Minecraft accounts are often set up by parents on behalf of their children on devices like iPads and desktops where they stay signed in indefinitely and are not constantly reentering the password but then suddenly need it when their computer crashes. They do not have a long list of "purchased products", they haven't used outlook so can't submit the "subject lines of the last emails you sent" and they don't have a console so can't use the console identification number. They really should just be able to send the MCID or DID or their Gamertag and the parent account credentials, or even the transaction number and date from when they purchased Minecraft. None of the current recovery options are suitable for kids that only have outlook/microsoft/Xbox Live accounts to play Minecraft. I signed up for Minecraft when it was still on Mojang and I don't even remember picking a password!
