Because the leak of the original code of Legacy Console Edition is basically unstoppable, Mojang could consider re-releasing it on steam with some adjustments that i'll discuss below:
- Community updates via Workshop
Benevolent and skilled player programmers could backport every new addition to the game into the legacy ver. and publish them on steam.
-Official Oversight
A small team of official developers could quality check the written code before pushing it to the mainline distribution.
-Community Driven Update Testing
Players could test the implemented modders contributions and give feedback to Mojang before dropping them live, ensuring game stability.
PROs:
fast updates and fixes, another source of money for microsoft,
Easier Damage Control: if the game is officialy available there's no need for illegal copies other than piracy and the sole act of removing the unofficial version would not be seen as an attack to the community.
CONs: Fragmentation of the community
Possible Solution:
Implement a translation layer between Java, Bedrock and Legacy to make the crossplatform possible.
which would lead to --> NO MORE RIVALRY BETWEEN DIFFERENT EDITIONS OF THE GAME.
I'm perfecly aware that this may sound like Science Fiction right now, however with proper discussion and planning, it could realistically be done.
