With the announcement of Minecraft switching to the Vulkan graphics API, i think now is a good time to talk about bringing back an old performance-related feature: 2D Items when dropped on the ground.
Prior to Official Release 1.4.6, dropping an item (not blocks) on the ground would make them display as 2D billboarded sprites, facing the player in whatever direction they are facing, except for the Y-axis. In 1.4.6, 3D item drops were implemented, but only on Fancy Graphics. In 1.8, 2D Items were gone from Fast Graphics. The last time players would see this feature was in Bedrock Edition, before 1.16 released.
This feature could increase performance for computers that can hardly run Minecraft on even Fast Graphics. It would also be a good opportunity to bring back an old feature now that the road is paved for Vibrant Visuals on Java.
Thank you for your consideration.
