This suggestion is being made due to the only allied mob in the game which can shoot ranged attacks being the snowman which:
-Is not very powerful offensively
-Melts
My suggestion involves taking existing mechanics in the game to create a new mob that could fill this gap while coexisting (building upon) the Villager mob.
The mob would appear at first simple: A villager mob, that may appear similar in appearance to the Librarian (perhaps the bookmark in the book on their heads is longer? Emerges from the back of the head?).
This mob would be created by giving ordinary villagers (perhaps librarians) a special book, a 'Scholar's Journal', found in dungeons and other generated structures. This will permanently turn them into the new 'Spell Scholar' (name could be anything). The scholar's main behavior involves attacking hostile mobs by summoning tipped arrows, however, the effects of the arrows can be random and unhelpful. The scholar's 'intelligence' can be leveled up by providing more Scholar Journals until a cap is reached (the rate at which the tipped arrows they fire are effective and do damage, perhaps the rate at which they fire multiple arrows at once). The 'leveling up' could change the Scholar's appearance slightly, similar to villagers.
As an alternative to the limited and rare 'Scholar's Journal' being a necessary item to level up the Scholars, perhaps getting them to the max level could involve feeding/giving them *ONE* of *EVERY SINGLE* Enchantment book in the game?
