If Foxes can eat food and gain effects from them from Golden Apples and Suspicious Stew, why shouldn't they be able to drink Potions? It would be convenient for buffing or healing a player's Fox without the inefficiency of Splash Potions, as well as removing effects from a player's Fox by giving it Milk to drink. I understand that the Fox is supposed to like and want to eat Food items, and that Potions and Milk don't restore food points, but they are still consumable so I feel like it would still fit in and make sense.
Since the player would want the fox to have Potion effects before wielding a Sword or holding some other item (most likely), it would also make sense for the Bucket left over after drinking milk, or the Potion Bottle after drinking Potions to be discarded for it to pick up the Sword or other item. Perhaps Empty Buckets as well as Empty Potion Bottles could be a lower priority item for the Fox, where it would prefer any other item over them (just like how it discards any non-food item for food items). This would be very useful for players that want to fight alongside their Foxes without wanting to worry about splashing it with a Splash Potion and possibly splashing other entities they don't want to. It could also be modified to work the same way with bowls for soup, but this isn't all too important to the main idea.
It would just be a nice detail to have pet Foxes drink liquids to wash down all that yummy food they eat.
