Under many modern towns and cities are remains of older cities and towns, often just the old floor, they offer good insight into what came before.
I propose it would be cool to have small structures in the form of a chest, jug or barrel or some other storage device on the floor which could be made of some sort of dirty version of terracotta or cobblestone (things you might make floors out of). Within the chest you could have an old journal with some text in, perhaps randomly generated (perhaps not) being something as simple as gossip on the neighbours that might suggest theres more to be found (perhaps another floor or even treasure trove nearby!) or even a note on something that happened that day.
Essentially these structures could be the size of the village requiring you to dig to unearth more of the history to just being some small floor of a shed that survived. You could end up excavating a whole village to find what happened to murr the butchers prized sword! A chance to understand what goes on in those villagers big heads.
