There are times when you just don't want Redstone dust to connect to another line right next to it. For some applications you can use blocks or repeaters to get around it, but sometimes it's harder, especially for use with comparators in sorters, e.g.
What if we could use glowstone dust to substitute for redstone dust. They would work identically, but the two would never connect. This is akin to having slime and honey blocks able to be next to each other and not stick together and count against each others' block limit when being moved by pistons. You could have a tiled application in a sorter where you could run alternating lines of redstone and glowstone and ensure they would never affect one another.
