With 1.18 greatly changing one of the most core aspects of Minecraft, and 1.19 seeking to greatly improve the sense of wonder and dread I think that adding on to the lighting engine, or maybe looking into adding a new one is not a terrible idea.
1.19 is about making the game more scary, more beautiful and more immersive. So I think changing and improving the way light works could greatly help with this goal.
For example:
Fireflies are going to be some kind of mob/entity in the game, as of Minecraft live 2021 they appear quite bland, however they would be much more beautiful if they had some sort of greenish glow around them.
Or when the sun sets the light on blocks and entities becomes a darker and darker orange until the sun is gone and the night begins with only a slightly bluish dim moonlight signifying danger.
Or if you are delving down into a deep cave system and you see in the distance the slight blue glow of skulk showing that you have reached something new.
These could be more like effects rather than something like RTX or shaders to make it more playable on devices such as phones. I also think adding some form of coloured lighting would be a very good idea as it can be a bit immersion breaking when something like deep blue soul fire gives out a relatively bland yellowish light.
I don't think that this would run well on all devices so it would be important to have the ability to toggle the settings between high, low and off.
