This is a reference to the Grimm's fairy tale, The Frog Prince, where the princess loses her ball in the pond and the frog retrieves it for her in exchange for her friendship.
This next bit might be a bit much, but perhaps this could also be the way to tame them, referencing the aforementioned friendship.
