Everyone hates the wandering trader and I think an overhaul is long overdue, as do many other people. I believe a fix that has net positives all around would be that the wandering trader should sell the currently unrenewable resources in the game, this would include basic things like dirt and sand but could also include "expensive" items like ore blocks and quartz. It would be possible to balance the more expensive items by making them cost a lot more emeralds and be able to obtain less, but blocks like dirt and sand being renewable makes a lot more block types renewable. It is possible to go out and excavate large areas for those blocks, but I hate tearing up the world and would love an alternative like this.
Doing this would make the wandering trader actually useful and possibly the most desirable villager. If blocks or items are changed to be renewable in a different way later, it would be easy to simply remove the trade from the wandering trader.
The only downsides would be the balancing of some items would be a little difficult, like if you want dirt. If the trader sells dirt at a high price or too few, it would be pointless, but if the trader makes it too easy to get dirt, no one would ever do the manual labor of digging. Another potential downside would be that not all items would be included (dragon egg) but also diamonds would be a debate. The diamond ores are renewable and so diamonds would be, so I don't think they would be added as a trade.
