In the real world, there are fur farms that breed foxes to produce new fur patterns and colors. Since foxes already need to be bred in order to have a chance at domesticating the babies, it’d be cool if fur mutations were added, so that when you bred foxes, their babies had a random chance at getting a fur color and/or pattern mutation. And the more you breed foxes with the same or similar mutations, the clearer it gets and the more likely that mutation will stay around in the line. And once the foxes have been bred enough to get their fur to a specific development point, they become fully tamed like cats and wolves in the game and follow you around and attack things you hit.
An example of how this works.
Breed two wild foxes: their baby gets slightly darker fur as a mutation. Breed this Fox with another one with slightly darker fur and their baby gets even darker fur, and maybe mutates in a different tail pattern where the white is slowly going away. Keep breeding each generation until you get a black fox with no white on it’s tail. This Fox is now fully tame and behaves like wolves and cats.
Fox color variants I recommend with this: black, grey, pale yellow, more red(not the normal orange), blue-grey, brown, dusty brown-grey.
Fur pattern variants: no white, a lot of white, white with spots/saddles of color, nose-blaze, marble of multiple colors (like a calico cat)
