Community-run servers already provide a more advanced multiplayer experience through cross-play support, customization, and flexible tools. Many of these servers successfully allow Bedrock and Java players to play together, which has set a clear expectation within the community that cross-edition play is both possible and desirable.
In comparison, Realms are positioned as a premium, official service but currently offer fewer features than many public servers. This creates a situation where the “simpler” option is also the more limited one. Introducing official Bedrock–Java cross-play would give Realms a unique advantage that third-party servers cannot easily replicate: a secure, first-party solution that prioritizes ease of use and inclusivity.
By supporting cross-play, Realms could become the one place where players do not need workarounds, plugins, or technical know-how—just friends, regardless of edition. As a small bonus, it would also reduce the number of conversations that begin with, “Wait… you’re on Bedrock?” :D
