By leading the sniffer towards the area where a player died and lost their items, the sniffer will have a chance to dig up despawned items after the player has fed it XP (either from player death or XP bottles). This will only have a certain amount of uses, so not everything will be recoverable and the items recovered will be random or luck based, and this behavior will only happen within a certain vicinity of the player's death.
In addition, players can increase the chance of recovering valuable items by feeding the sniffer (similar to how feeding a brown mooshroom certain flowers will yield various effects). Items/potions fed to the sniffer will change the chance of recovering an item with higher enchants or higher tier weapons (the potion of luck would fit in here).
Furthermore, the sniffer would be slightly revamped as a buried treasure guide, meaning it would randomly pathfind towards buried treasure/ruins/dungeons if it's nearby or within a certain distance. The sniffer could also dig up buried treasure or archeological items if near those spots.
Why add these features? The sniffer is an interesting mob that's underutilized due to it's niche features and obscure method to obtain. In other words, the effort to get a sniffer isn't really worth what it does. These changes would add onto its existing mechanics without losing sight of the sniffers design while still providing useful features.
TLDR: make the sniffer a treasure guide/item recovery mob
