The latest Minecraft snapshot made string (the block, not the item) more visible, both in the tripwire and as a standalone block.
This runs counter to the way most players use it in-game. Making it more visible in tripwires is already silly, since it defeats the purpose of using tripwires as a cleverly hidden trap. But the real issue is having it be clearly visible without the tripwire.
The main use for string among players is to create features such as wall posts, by placing it on top of stone walls to force the model to change, or to block saplings from growing so they keep looking pretty and small. This works specifically because the texture is so subtle that you won't notice it without looking closely. By increasing string visibility, you remove that functionality, without any real option to replace it.
