The Poisonous Potato April Fools’ update gave us a glimpse of what could be possible with redstone. A block that can move structures along with itself without slime blocks opens a whole new range of possibilities from doors to flying machines and beyond.
Right now, slime/honey flying machines are possible, but very limited. The selection of blocks that stick to slime is poor and scalability gets increasingly more difficult. Everything needs to be rigidly glued together by slime blocks, which themselves add more to the push limit. Relying on the rigid placement of slime blocks often leaves the user with inconvenient and messy designs.
The already existing Floatater as a mechanic is almost perfect. Although added as a joke, if proper restrictions and balance corrections were considered, it could very well be a fully-fledged Minecraft feature. Main improvements would be:
- Having a push limit (the Floatater already has this).
- Having immovable obstacles (Bedrock, Obsidian, etc.).
- A superglue-like item (taking inspiration from the Create mod) that lets the user click on a block to mark it as movable.
These three tweaks alone could take care of exploitation, balance, and griefing.
Slime machines would still be in use by those who need them. This feature wouldn’t disrupt already existing playstyles, only add to them. If properly considered and made fair, a Floatater block would greatly benefit the player's experience and invite them to further expand on what's possible with redstone.
