When customising touch controls layout, a red zone prohibits users from placing buttons at the very top of the screen. This makes it difficult for people who use 4 fingers or for trigger attachments to be used for a more comfortable gaming experience.
I understand the menu/chat/emote buttons are fixed to the top centre, along with some informational icons. However, these could be made in a way that they can be customised too. Even your goal is to make control settings easy to use for children, add an advanced control layout toggle to enable these customisations for those who would find this incredibly beneficial.
Along with this, being able to move the hotbar or even make it vertical, similar to how Terraria does it would make it very easy to use, especially on larger devices where your finger might not be able to reach that one item in the middle of the hotbar.
Gyroscopic controls are being implemented into many first person mobile games today, and for good reason! They allow players to control camera movement with more precision, while still being able to look around and make quick turns with a flick of the thumb. This could let us have our camera sensitivity higher when using the thumb to move the camera for facing enemies surprising us from behind as we stand on the edge of a cliff, while still being able to shoot a bow or crossbow at anything that isn't a couple of blocks away from us.
Thank you :)
