Minecraft has very few long-range weapons, so here are two new throwable items that would add fun combat mechanics while still feeling vanilla: Throwing stars would be a fast, skill-based ranged weapon that acts like a mix of snowballs and tridents.
Core Features
- Thrown instantly (no charge needed)
- Travel straight and fast
- Stack in groups of 3
- Must be retrieved after throwing unless enchanted
- Craftable in stone, iron, gold, diamond, and netherite variants
Damage
- Gold → 3 damage
- Stone → 4 damage
- Iron → 5 damage
- Diamond → 7 damage
- Netherite → 8 damage
Enchantments
-
Boomerang (I–III)
Works like Loyalty — the throwing star returns but also deals damage to mobs on the way back. -
Slicing (I–III)
Lets the star pass through additional mobs, like crossbow Piercing.
Throwing stars would give players a fast, lightweight ranged option that rewards accuracy.
Fire charges should do more than act like flint & steel. They already use the same texture as ghast fireballs so players should be able to throw them!
Function
- Thrown like snowballs, eggs, or wind charges
- Could create a small explosion (1-2 blocks) on impact
- Ignite blocks and mobs in a short radius
- New Crafting recipe with blaze powder and magma cream
This adds a natural late-game ranged tool without overpowering the bow or crossbow. Minecraft’s ranged combat is limited. Adding a fast throwable weapon and a fire-based explosive brings. Both items expand existing mechanics (snowballs, tridents, fire charges, wind charges) in a way that feels perfectly vanilla.
