Many players have already wished for throwable spears, so here is a suggestion to merge throwability and the charge attack, based on player movement speed / mounting:
- When still or walking, the spear is thrown by the player.
- When running, the charge attack is used.
- If the movement speed changes during either throwing or running, the action is stopped.
- If the player is on a mount, he always uses the charge attack, independent of movement speed.
- Alternatively you could also only allow the charge attack for mounted players, not running players
Additionally, I think its useful to re-balance the spears stats, to actually make it a viable alternative to the sword. Making it a very specialized weapon with only limited use (kinda like the mace) makes it "dead on arrival" for most of the playerbase. My suggestions are:
- increase spear damage tiers to sword damage -1
- decrease range from 4,5 to 4 (talking about JE)
- remove multi-enemy hits, so that the attack ever only damages one entity (when jabbing)
- change attack speed of all spears to either 0.9 or 1
Some will agree and some will disagree with my suggestions, but I'm always glad to get some feedback. (Especially if its from Mojang ;) )
