I know people think this is too much like the trident, but I think there are ways to avoid that and make the spear a truly versatile weapon. One option is to lock it behind an enchantment, this way players would have to choose between having a normal, lunge, or throwing spear. However, another option (and one that I personally like better), is having the spear be throwable by default (although incompatible with the lunge enchantment) BUT a huge portion of the Spears durability is taken away upon a successful throw, and I mean 50%, 90%, maybe even 100%! This way, players could use their Spears normally, but when the time finally comes and its in its very last durability points, they could opt to throw it for one final heavy blow of damage. I also expect that with either route, a new strategy involving a hotbar full of disposable, lower tier Spears would emerge, similar to what some players do with Crossbows. By making the Spear throwable, you could perfectly bridge the gap between melee and ranged weapons!
