Item to allow pets to roam close to home

Pets once tamed just sit at home. What if there was an item that you could place that would allow your pet to roam within proximity of the item (a dog/cat bed, parrot stand, etc)? That way pets could feel a little more interesting and feel less like prisoners in my base. I'd spend HOURS collecting pets if they felt more realistic at home.
