Similarly to before, Spears would work by consuming Durability instead of Hunger.
However, two changes would be made:
First, Durability Usage per level would be reduced from 8>32>128 per use, to 2>8>32 per use.
(Gold/Wood/Stone/Copper/Iron/Diamond/Netherite would see the # of Lunge 3 uses increase from 1/1/2/2/2/13/16 to 1/2/5/6/8/49/64 respectively).
Secondly, implementing a Tag (Enchant and/or Item?) that would nullify the effect of Unbreaking for Durability Damage. Charging would continue to function normally, but Lunge would be affected by Unbreaking. (This could in theory be extended to item mechanics such as Axe Durability by players, if not simply an Enchantment tag)
This would generally increase the usefulness of Spears (Keeping the penalty impactful, while allowing more ease of use), while adding additional functionality for future use.
