For years since the trident was added in Java, it has been an awesome tool for elytra travel when paired with riptide, but not so much as a weapon. For starters, the impaling concept is a great one, but really niche in Java, where it only deals extra damage to aquatic mobs such as (elder) guardians & fish, but not drowneds, which don't count as aquatic mobs but rather undead ones only. Bedrock's implementation however is way better: impaling deals extra damage to all mobs in water & rain, and it doesn't matter what kind of mob either! Another thing is that if a loyalty trident is thrown into the void in Java, it will never return. In Bedrock? The trident will automatically return to the player. Finally, in Bedrock, tridents can be shot from dispensers, but this is impossible in Java.
Interestingly enough, Mojang fixed all three parity issues in the combat snapshots! Moreover, the trident now got a reach of 4 blocks! Sadly, none of these features have ever made it in the base game so far, so I thought the upcoming drop would be a great opportunity to finally improve the trident!
So my proposal would be mainly to bring all of these amazing features into the base game. Moreover, someone suggested over on the Discord server to make riptide tridents pierce through multiple entities at a time, which would be nice, but may need to be balanced appropriately: https://discord.com/channels/1138536747932864532/1426644509378347251
